Diversity/Anti-Racism Transformation Team (DARTT)
The Diversity/Antiracism Transformation Team was created by the Board of Trustees in 2007. It grew from a commitment by our former ministers to have Paint Branch be among early adopters in a denominational initiative promoted by Diversity Consultant Dr. Paula Cole Jones to focus on eradicating racism within UU congregations. DARTT’s charter was initially approved in 2008 and revised and reapproved in 2018.
Initiatives include resolutions written and advanced by DARTT and adopted by the congregation including the Intentional Multicultural Congregation Resolutions, the 8th Principle at the church level, the Welcoming Congregation Renewal and the hanging of a Black Lives Matter sign. Programs include: Sunday Services on themes including Kwanzaa, Indigenous People, and books like The Warmth of Other Suns; Workshops and Enrichment Hour activities, including a twice-a-month book discussion (Bookread), and panels and special presentation on topics such as the Kerner Commission Report and Police Misconduct, Racial Climate Assessment, and the Article II Commission; and opportunities to share experiences of both joy and sorrow in interactions within and outside of PBUUC. Over the years, DARTT has sponsored field trips to movies, museums, and theaters to further explore themes connected to its mission.
DARTT has supported other PBUUC activities and groups and is an active supporter of the Racial Climate Coalition (RCC).
DARTT has provided financial assistance to programs at PBUUC including supporting a speaker for the Sunday Service on Indigenous People, and to community programs including sponsoring the Racial Justice Essay and Creative Arts Contest for High School Students sponsored by the Prince George’s County Lynching Memorial Project. DARTT has also provided financial assistance for attendees at Jubilee III, a denominational anti-racism workshop.
