"Notes of a Native Son", James Baldwin’s first collection of essays published in 1955 has been reprinted and included in other collections several times since then. These early essays introduce the ideas and writing techniques that Baldwin returned to throughout his career. Read the first 5 (out of 10) essays: “Everybody’s Protest Novel”, “Many Thousands Gone”, “Carmen Jones”, “The Harlem Ghetto”, and “Journey to Atlanta”. If your edition has them, read the Introduction by Edward P. Jones, Baldwin’s preface to the 1984 edition, and his Autobiographical Notes.
